Maths
As well as following the individual strands of the NSW Maths syllabu
s, children at HHPS are involved in the following Math activities.
In the K to 2 area, an intensive program, ‘Count Me In Too' is in progress. This program caters to the individual needs of the children as they work independently or in groups. Parent helpers assist with the running of this program.
In the primary grades children are continually assessed and strengths and weaknesses formulate the teaching program. Activities can be individual or group based.
Children are encouraged to participate in external Math competitions, including the UNSW International Maths Test, with many being awarded distinctions and credits in their age divisions.
Another competition that children in Years 3 to 6 are involved in every year is Maths Olympiad. Children have firstly to qualify by sitting a test and then they are eligible to compete in the 5 sections of the competition. Each week they meet with one of the teachers to learn strategies and train for the different competitions.
Results in Basics skills in Years 3 and 5 are, as a rule, above state average.
Regardless of children's strengths or weaknesses, all levels of Math are accounted for across the school. Children who need help are assisted in class, individually or in groups by visiting STLD staff. Our GATS program challenges talented children.
