Environment

Hornsby Heights Public School is set in a tranquil bushland environment. The grounds have been designed and maintained with this in mind by a very active and enthusiastic grounds committee. Native shrubs and grasses are planted to provide food and habitat for the great variety of birds and animals which thrive in the ecosystem within the school grounds.

Children's interest and respect for their environment is encouraged by teachers within all key learning areas, by invitation to the school of environmental community groups and presenters and by outisde excursions. Children are encouraged to interact with their environment. They are made aware of the big part each individual can play in conservation, regeneration, waste reduction, recycling and the reduction in the use of water and energy at school and in the local community.

Every year the children at Hornsby Heights Public School are involved in activities on National Tree Day. Many of the young trees seen growing at Crosslands Reserve were planted by present and previous Hornsby Heights pupils and their families. In 2004 the pupils in the "tree planting brigade" were invited to display their botanical skills by taking part in a Better Homes and Gardens television presentation.
